What happens next?

  • 1 Arraignment

    This initial appearance is where you enter a plea of guilt, not guilty, or no contest. Your lawyer can counsel you on how to plead and can protect your rights when release conditions are set.

  • 2 Preliminary Examination

    A hearing where the government puts on evidence to establish if there is probable cause for the charge(s).

  • 3 Pre-Trial Motions

    This is when your defense lawyer and the prosecutor exchange information, your lawyer can file motions to suppress evidence, change release conditions, seek to have evidence excluded, or ask the court to make certain findings prior to trial.

  • 4 Plea Deals

    Before the trial, it may be possible for your attorney to negotiate with the prosecutor for reduced charges or lighter penalties.

  • 5 Trial

    If there is no case dismissal or plea deal, then your case will be set for trial.

  • Arraignment

    This initial appearance is where you enter a plea of guilt, not guilty, or no contest. Your lawyer can counsel you on how to plead and can protect your rights when bail is set.

  • Preliminary Examination

    A judge will evaluate any incriminating evidence to decide whether or not it is sufficient to establish that you are guilty of the charges.

  • Pre-Trial Motions

    Also called the discovery phase, this is when your defense lawyer and the prosecutor exchange information, and your lawyer can press for the case to be dismissed pre-trial.

  • Plea Deals

    Before the trial, it may be possible for your attorney to negotiate with the prosecutor for reduced charges or lighter penalties.

  • Trial

    If there is no case dismissal or plea deal, your case is presented before a jury and judge. This could result in an acquittal, guilty verdict, or case dismissal. You may be able to appeal a conviction if there is one.
